Reward offered in post office robbery

The United States Postal Service has offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the men who robbed the Fayetteville Post Office Friday evening.

A postal employee was accosted by two men behind the post office on Georgia Avenue Friday around 7 p.m. Three large mail bags were stolen, according to Yulonda Burns, a spokesperson for the Atlanta postal inspector's office.

Anyone who was at the post office between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Friday is asked to call 1-877-876-2455. You may have seen something that would help investigators, Burns said.

Fayette County Sheriff's officers and the Fayetteville Police searched the area immediately after the robbery, but came up empty-handed.

Burns said postal inspectors are trying to determine if the Fayetteville robbery is related to a robbery at the Lovejoy Post Office in July and an incident in McDonough where items were stolen from a truck loading dock in November. Friday's robbery in Fayetteville took place in the fenced back area of the post office. The employee was not injured.

Stealing mail is a federal crime and the robbers could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
