Colwell selected to replace Bacallao on school board

By Pat Cooper

At a special called meeting on Monday afternoon, the Fayette County School Board appointed former interim school superintendent Dan Colwell to the open place on the board.
Colwell will finish the unexpired term of Mary Kay Bacallao, who resigned her District 2 seat on the board to run for the position of Georgia state school superintendent.
On tap for the vote were retiring board member Bob Todd, Leonard Presberg and chairman Marion Key. Presberg abstained from the vote, noting that Colwell had made a donation to his reelection campaign, that he had returned the donation but he still felt it best to abstain from the vote, even though he believed Colwell would be a great addition to the school board. Board member Barry Marchman was not present. Key said she contacted Marchman regarding the meeting, which had been scheduled late Friday afternoon, but he said he was unable to be present.
“I felt this was too important a decision,” said Key, “to continue the meeting to another date.”
The decision passed on a 2-0 vote, with Presberg’s abstention.
