The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers marched through the first round Tuesday evening 7-0 over Region 1 champion Thomas Co Central. The Panthers were out of the blocks quickly scoring three goals in the first seven minutes of the game to put the Yellow Jackets on their heels from the start.
Sarah Yoss got the ball rolling, scoring off an assist by Molly Moroney in the second minute of the game. Two minutes later it was Lauren Yoss finishing a pass from Leslie Logan to double the advantage. Jenna Currin was on the receiving end of a Kayla Feigenbaum cross to make it three with just over six minutes elapsed in the game.
The pace slowed a bit as Thomas Co Central played the ball in behind trying to run into goal. However, Dylan Patterson, Rachel Catlett, and Claire Williams were well organized and gave up few chances as the Yellow Jacket striker was wide of the target when given the opportunity. The Panthers reasserted themselves and made it four when Currin was again the finisher, this time Logan providing her the service. Just eight seconds before half, a Moroney laser off a drop by Sarah Yoss had the team up 5-0 at the break.
The second half saw the rest of the team get in on the action. They took their time settling in as the Yellow Jackets had a bit more possession early but it wasn’t long until the team had control once again. A long range bomb from Ariana Przybyzsewski made it 6-0 as Thomas Co Central could only half clear a corner kick. Katlyn Keown finally had one of her blistering shots hit the net in the 74th minute as Currin played the ball wide and Keown made no mistake. Chayla Park played shut down defense against the Yellow Jackets’ most dangerous forward in the second half.
The win raises the team’s record to 14-5-0 on the season and advances them to the Round of Sixteen in the 5A State Playoffs. They will take on Greenbrier Evans in Augusta next week in the Sweet Sixteen round of the 5A State Playoffs.
The Starr's Mill boys took care of business with a 10-0 victory over the Northside Columbus Patriots on Wednesday night.
Northside kept it close for much of the first half, before the Panthers blew the game open. Starr's Mill did strike first, less than ten minutes into the game when Walter Hix took a feed from Kyle Ulversoy and drilled home the opening score.
Northside would keep the Panthers close for a while, luring them into a number of offsides calls. Finally, Hix got free and got his second goal of the game, this time off an assist by Tristan Ulversoy.
From there, it was all down hill for the Patriots. With three minutes left in the first half, Hix made it a hat trick on a penalty kick. With nine seconds left in the half Jahmeil Curwen chipped in it for a 4-0 lead.
Patrick Spencer took his turn early in the second half, scoring a pair of goals. The first came just 40 seconds in and the second came one minute later.
Jahmeil Curwen took the next turn with still 37:20 left. Walter Hix got goal number eight, and his fourth of the night, less than two minutes later.
The Panthers slowed the pace considerably before a Curwen penalty kick made it 9-0. Armon Varmeziar's header capped off the 10-0 mercy rule victory.
The Panthers will hit the round in round two when they play Glynn Academy in Brunswick on Wednesday.
