Jail infrastructure committee scheduled to tour jails

2013-03-21

By Pat Cooper

In order to get a grip on the problem the county is facing with either rehabbing the old jail unit or adding to the new jail, county commission chairman Steve Brown organized a committee to look into the siutation.
After an extensive discussion at their first meeting, the 12-member jail committee- Brown, Sheriff Barry Babb, local attorney Claude Paquin, Nova Brown, Chuck Watkins, Bob Ross, Tommy Turner, Bess Stevens, Scott Bradshaw and former Peachtree City manager Bernie McMullen- will be making a tour of the county’s old and new facilities.
The questions still remain: Should the old facility be torn down or renovated? Should and extra pod be added to the new jail? Or should the county consider trying to board at prisoners to other facilities? Cost effectiveness was the watchword, with common sense running a close second.
The quorum will meet in the Jail’s Lobby located at 145 Johnson Avenue, Fayetteville, on Wednesday, March 27, at 9:00 a.m.
This tour of the Fayette County jails is not considered an official meeting in accordance with O.C.G.A. 50-14-1(a)(3)(b)(i).
Due to security risks involved, this tour is not open to the public.
