When it comes to helping families in need, students and faculty at Brooks Elementary give generously.

As budgets get tighter and the number of people needing help climbs, local nonprofits are trying to get more donations than ever before.

The annual Canned Food and Toy Drive at Brooks Elementary always brings in a number of donations, but this year was the largest collection in the school’s history with 1,219 cans of food and 1,050 toys.

Half of the food was donated to the Fayette Samaritans. The other half and all of the toys were given to Promise Place.

Third grade teacher Kathy Caldwell, who has headed the project for the past eight years, says she is proud of the school.

“These food items and toys will surely help many families in need this holiday season. I’m so proud and excited for Brooks Elementary.”
