Lisa’s Ride - 8th annual ride to raise awarement and advocacy for suicide prevention on Oct. 6. Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. at Big Daddy’s Oyster Bar and Pub, 101 Crossing East, Peachtree City. The Fayette County Democratic Committee will sponsor a voter registration drive Oct. 6 at Ben’s Flea Market, 939-A North Glynn Street from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and on Oct. 7 voter registration will take place from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Fellowship of Love Church located at North Fayette Elementary School. In addition to assistance in voter registration, you can complete change of address forms, verify registration, sign up for absentee ballots, and obtain other information as needed. This is a nonpartisan event and everyone in the community is welcome to participate.

Southern Crescent Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Oct. 6, at the Frederick Brown, Jr. Amphitheater parking lot. Over 1000 people from 7 counties on Atlanta’s south side will participate. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the walkers and runners starting at 9:30 a.m. Walkers will travel the shaded cart paths for 3.2 miles. The initial Walk was organized by Floy Farr in 2000. More than $2 million has been raised to aid those suffering with Alzheimer’s in Georgia. This is a fun, family-oriented event. There is no charge to walk, but a donation would be greatly appreciated! Hosted by the Fayette County Branch of the NAACP, the first Family Fall Festival is an all-day, family-friendly community event with a variety of fun activities. The festival will run from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., and will include music performances, spoken word poetry, author readings, dance performances, arts and crafts, and a book festival. Food, free health screenings, free document shredding, and voter registration tables will also be available. The Friends of the Peachtree City Library will present “Terrific Turtles,” an introduction to nature’s wonders through programs designed to familiarize children with animals, their habits and their habitats. The first program will be held on Oct. 6, at 10:30 a.m. in the Children’s Department of the Peachtree City Library. This program, for kids in Grades 1—6 and their parents will focus on land turtles, especially box turtles, which are both colorful and plentiful in Fayette County. The second program, on Oct. 20, also at 10:30 and in the Children’s Department, will be tailored for students in Grades 7—12 and adults, and will focus on the technology—including radio transmitters and GPS systems—used to track the movements of some of these turtles. The Coweta County Master Gardener Extension Volunteers will be holding a Fall Plant Sale at the Coweta County Extension Greenhouse on Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. All plants are priced to sell at $1 and $2. There are abelias, golden euonymus, gardenias, hydrangeas, spirea and many others. All plants must go! The Extension Greenhouse is located next to the Horse Arena just inside the Coweta County Fairgrounds Entrance at 275 Pine Road, Newnan. Beginning Oct. 6, The United Methodist Church in Brooks, will offer a beginning dance class in “Swing”.  The location is perfect, as it is centrally located to Newnan, Peachtree City, Senoia, Griffin and Fayetteville.  The “Swing” is a very popular dance to songs of today and yesteryear, and has stood the test of time.  This dance will be just in time for the up-coming holiday parties. Oct. 11 at 7 p.m., a full-cast staged reading of the play by Rebecca Gilman, based on the novel by Carson McCullers. The evening includes a musical prelude and complimentary desserts. Couples are invited to a Western Ballroom Dance and Western Dance Lesson on Oct. 12, at the LaFayette Christian School Gym, 1904 Hamilton Road in LaGrange. Dementia Caregiver Support Group - The Sixty Plus Program at Piedmont Fayette Hospital offers a monthly support group for the caregivers of older adults with memory loss. Designed to be both informational and supportive, the group will provide a confidential and welcoming atmosphere for family members and friends who want to learn more about dementia. The emotional, medical, legal and financial aspects of this condition will be discussed at meetings. The group is facilitated by a licensed social worker and is open to anyone in the community. Co-sponsored by Sixty Plus Older Adult Services and the Alzheimer’s Association.
The group meets the Third Wednesday of each month from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Piedmont Fayette Hospital, West entrance, 1267 Building Cancer Wellness Center, third floor.
