Tyrone will be seeing a new fire station on a 6.6 acre tract on Highway 74 north and Jenkins Road.
The new facility will replace the fire station in downtown Tyrone that has been plagued by septic problems over the years and the new station will be hooked to the town’ sewer system.
“While we were negotiating for this site it didn’t initially have sewer access,” said Fire Chief Tom Bartlett, “but Tyrone did agree to it.
The county is looking at an October 2013 opening according to Bartlett with a 300-day construction period.
Public Safety Director Allen McCullough noted, at last week’s Fayette County Board of Commissioners workshop meeting, that the design for the fire station is a change up from what the county is used to seeing, with living quarters all on one side of the building. The building fronts on Jenkins Road, adjacent to the school complex, giving emergency equipment the opportunity to turn north or south on Highway 74.
The 9,400 square-foot brick facility will have options for expansions for both housing and bays for future crews of as many as 10 firefighters and the entire area is handicapped accessible, with a backup generator and a spot set aside for community groups “to do community gardening.”
Fire officials said they are planning to present the architectural drawings to the Tyrone Town Council after they had been approved on the county level. |
